Leather Color Coat (Leather Paint)

Leather Color Coat (Leather Paint) is formulated specifically for use on “coated”, “protected”. “finished” or “pigmented” leather.

There are many labels attached to this leather type, but for simplicity,we generally use the term “finished” due to the fact that the leather has had an artificial surface finish applied at the tannery. The original finish is predominantly a water based polyurethane that is pigmented to produce the color desired. When refinishing of the leather becomes necessary, the use of a pigmented, water based polyurethane is crucial to the reproduction of the original tannery finish.

One of the benefits of water based polyurethane is in the fact that they not only perform perfectly on leather, but they can also be used, equally as well, on vinyl fabrics and plastics.

Semi-Aniline Leather Dye

Semi-Aniline Leather Dye

Leather Magic!™ semi-aniline leather dye is a specialized product designed to address the unique challenges of maintaining and restoring semi-aniline leather. Here’s a breakdown of its key features and benefits:

Key Features:
1. Combination Formula: The dye is a blend of pigmented top coat and full aniline dye. This dual-action formula ensures deep penetration into the leather while also providing a protective surface layer.

2. Deep Penetration: The dye portion of the product soaks into the leather, ensuring that the color is deeply embedded and long-lasting. This helps in restoring the leather’s original appearance.

3. Surface Protection: The top coat portion remains on the surface, providing a slight protective layer that helps guard against future soiling and staining. This is crucial for semi-aniline leather, which is known for its sensitivity to stains.

4. Restoration of Feel and Beauty: The combination of deep dye penetration and surface coating helps restore the leather’s soft, silky feel and luxurious appearance, bringing it back to its original condition.

Benefits:
– Enhanced Durability: While semi-aniline leather is naturally more sensitive, the added top coat from Leather Magic!™ dye provides an extra layer of protection, making it more resistant to everyday wear and tear.

– Aesthetic Appeal: The product helps maintain the luxurious look and feel of semi-aniline leather, which is highly valued in the furniture market for its premium appearance.

– Ease of Maintenance: By providing a protective top coat, the dye makes it easier to clean and maintain semi-aniline leather, reducing the risk of permanent staining.

Application:
– Restoration: Ideal for restoring faded or damaged semi-aniline leather furniture, bringing it back to its original glory.

– Maintenance: Regular use can help maintain the leather’s appearance and extend its lifespan, making it a cost-effective solution for high-end furniture.

Drawbacks:
– Sensitivity: Despite the added protection, semi-aniline leather remains more sensitive than fully top-coated leathers. Regular maintenance and prompt cleaning of spills are still necessary to prevent stains.

In summary, Leather Magic!™ semi-aniline leather dye is a specialized product that combines deep dye penetration with surface protection to restore and maintain the luxurious look and feel of semi-aniline leather. It addresses the inherent sensitivity of this type of leather, making it a valuable tool for both restoration and ongoing maintenance.

Why Do We Produce Polyurethane Dyes and Color Coats Instead of Acrylics?

The answer lies in the superior advantages of polyurethane:

  • Industry Standard: Tanneries worldwide use water-based polyurethanes to finish original leathers for furniture, automotive interiors, clothing, and nearly all pigmented leather products. Polyurethane is the preferred choice for modern tanning processes.
  • Deeper Penetration: Unlike acrylics, polyurethane penetrates deeper into the leather, ensuring a more permanent and long-lasting color that won’t crack or peel over time.
  • Natural Look and Feel: Polyurethane provides a softer, more natural appearance and texture to the leather, regardless of the color applied. It maintains the leather’s inherent beauty and suppleness.
  • Ease of Application: Polyurethane is more forgiving and easier to work with, making it ideal for both professionals and DIY enthusiasts.

The Difference Between Leather Dyes and Leather Color Coatings (Paint)

There’s a lot of confusion surrounding leather dyes and leather color coatings (often referred to as leather paint). Here’s a quick breakdown:

Leather Dye

What It Is: A coloring material designed to penetrate raw, unfinished, or unsealed leather.
Purpose: To deeply absorb into the leather, creating a rich, even color.
Application: Used primarily to embed a color deeply into unsealed leather. Produces a semi transparent color finish allowing imperfections and characteristics of the leather to be subtly visible depending on the intended use.
Best For: Unfinished leathers like Semi-Aniline, Suede, or NuBuck.

Leather Color Coatings (Paint)

What It Is: A surface-level coating that provides a colored finish only on the surface of the leather.
Purpose: To remain primarily on the leather’s surface, creating a durable, pigmented layer that is smooth to the touch and visually appealing while protecting the inner structure of the leather.
Application: A pigmented coating is applied that seals the leather to protect from staining and discoloration from exposure to normal wear and tear. The leather’s natural color remains underneath, visible on the backside.
Best For: Finished leathers where a surface coating is needed for restoration or customization.

The Truth About “Aniline Dyed” Leather:

Many furniture manufacturers label their products as “aniline dyed,” but this term refers more to the process than the materials used. In true aniline dyeing, the entire raw hide is dipped into a vat of dye, allowing the color to absorb completely through the leather. Depending on the intended use, the leather may be left unsealed, sealed, or even coated with a finish.

However, aniline dyes are only necessary during refinishing or restoration when working with unfinished leathers like Semi-Aniline, Suede, or NuBuck. For all other types of leather, leather color coatings (paint) are used to create a surface-level finish.
