Restore Faded Leather, Scratches & Surface Finish Damage
Over time, leather finishes can become faded, scratched, discolored, or worn from sunlight, friction, and everyday use.
When the underlying leather remains structurally sound, these problems can often be corrected by refinishing the surface rather than replacing the leather.
The Leather Color Restoration Kit is designed to address:
-
Sun-faded leather furniture and automotive upholstery
-
Worn or discolored leather finishes
-
Light scratches and scuff marks
-
Minor cracking confined to the original color finish
-
Uneven or faded leather color
-
Complete color changes on compatible finished leather
Important: Deep cracks, cuts, tears, and holes require additional repair materials before recoloring. For these projects, consider our Professional Leather Restoration Kit.
Change the Color of Your Leather
Want to transform beige leather into burgundy, restore faded green leather to a rich original shade, or give your furniture an entirely new appearance?
Leather Magic’s highly pigmented polyurethane Color Coats are formulated to cover the original color of properly prepared finished leather.
Whether you want a subtle restoration or a dramatic color change, the Leather Color Restoration Kit provides a practical alternative to replacing otherwise usable leather upholstery.
Leather Color Restoration Kit vs. Leather Dye vs. Color Balm
Leather Magic Color Restoration Kit:
Durable refinishing or color change of compatible finished leather.
Traditional penetrating leather dye:
Colors suitable only for absorbent leather.
Leather color balm:
Temporary cosmetic improvement of certain faded or worn areas.
Ordinary surface paint:
May lack the flexibility and adhesion needed for leather.
How Much Leather Will One Kit Cover?
One Leather Color Restoration Kit typically provides enough material to recolor:
-
The seating areas of two automotive bucket seats
-
The seating area of one medium-sized sofa
Actual coverage depends on the leather’s condition, the original and new colors, the application method, and the number of coats required.
Larger projects or substantial color changes may require additional Color Coat.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I permanently change the color of leather?
Yes. Leather Magic’s polyurethane Color Coat system is designed to create a durable, long-lasting finish on properly prepared, compatible leather. It can restore the original color or produce an entirely different color.
Is this a leather dye or a paint?
Leather Magic’s Color Coat is a water-based polyurethane leather refinishing material. It is commonly called leather dye, but it is formulated to reproduce the pigmented finish used on finished leather.
Will the new color rub off on clothing?
When the leather is correctly prepared and the Color Coat is properly applied and cured, the finish is designed to resist normal wear and color transfer.
Can this kit repair scratches and cracks?
It can refinish superficial scratches and minor cracking in the original color finish. Deeper cracks, tears, and holes require additional leather repair materials.
Can I use this kit on leather furniture and automotive seats?
Yes. It is designed for compatible finished leather used in furniture, automotive interiors, jackets, handbags, and other leather products.
Can I use it on semi-aniline, aniline, nubuck, or suede leather?
Different leather types require different restoration systems. This kit is intended for suitable finished leather. For sensitive or unfinished leather, choose the appropriate specialized Leather Magic kit.
Do I have to mix the leather color myself?
No. Leather Magic prepares the Color Coat in your selected or custom-matched color before shipping
How much leather can one kit recolor?
One kit generally covers the seating areas of two automotive bucket seats or one medium-sized sofa. Actual coverage varies by project.
How long does the Colorant take to dry?
Drying time can vary depending on several factors, including environmental conditions, temperature, humidity, and the thickness of the application.
Under normal conditions, when allowed to air dry naturally, the material will typically dry in approximately 10–15 minutes.
For faster results, a hair dryer can be used to gently accelerate the drying process, reducing drying time to just a couple of minutes.
When Can the Restored Leather Be Used?
The restored leather may be placed back into service as soon as the new finish is completely dry to the touch. However, special care should be taken during the first 24 hours while the Color Coat completes its curing process.
During this initial curing period, avoid exposure to water, liquids, excessive moisture, and heavy abrasion. Do not drag heavy objects across the newly refinished surface, as this may damage or discolor the finish.
Leather Magic® Color Coat requires approximately 24 hours to reach its maximum strength and durability. Although the surface may feel dry much sooner, the finish remains more vulnerable to damage and discoloration until the curing process is complete.
For the best results, treat the newly restored surface gently during the first 24 hours.
