Bring Faded Suede and Nubuck Back to Life

Suede and nubuck are valued for their natural appearance, soft feel, and distinctive surface texture.

Unfortunately, exposure to sunlight, body oils, everyday use, and cleaning can gradually cause the original color to fade or become uneven.

Leather Magic Aniline Leather Dye is formulated to restore color to these delicate materials without applying the conventional polyurethane surface coating used on finished or protected leather.

When properly applied, the dye provides a long-lasting recolored appearance while preserving the character of the leather.

What Is Aniline Leather Dye?

Aniline leather dye is a coloring material used on certain unfinished or absorbent leather surfaces.

The Leather Magic Aniline Leather Dye system is an alcohol-based, pigmented formulation designed for suede, nubuck, and suitable raw leather.

On suede and nubuck, the dye provides a semi-opaque coloring effect. On compatible untreated leather, the appearance may be somewhat more transparent.

The final appearance depends on the original leather color, absorbency, surface texture, and application technique.

Unlike conventional leather color coats, this product is not intended to create a thick protective coating over the surface.

Is This the Correct Dye for Your Leather?

Choosing the correct dye depends on the type of leather being restored.

Suitable Materials

  • Suede leather

  • Nubuck leather

  • Compatible raw or unfinished leather

  • Suitable untreated absorbent leather

Not Recommended For

  • Conventional top-coated or protected leather

  • Pigmented automotive leather

  • Bonded or coated leather

  • Vinyl and synthetic upholstery

  • Semi-aniline leather requiring a specialized finish restoration system

Important: A manufacturer’s label stating “aniline dyed” does not automatically mean the material should be refinished using this dye kit.

Aniline refers to a coloring process and does not necessarily identify the leather’s current surface finish.

If you are uncertain about the leather type, contact Leather Magic before ordering.

How to Dye Suede and Nubuck Leather

Step 1 — Identify the Leather

Confirm that the material is suede, nubuck, or another compatible unfinished leather.

Step 2 — Clean the Surface

Use the supplied cleaner according to the instructions to remove accumulated soil and contaminants.

Allow the material to dry completely.

Step 3 — Prepare and Test

Follow the preparation instructions supplied with the kit. Preparation techniques differ by leather type.

Test the dye on an inconspicuous area and allow it to dry before evaluating the color.

Step 4 — Apply the Dye

Use the supplied PreVal spray unit to apply the dye in controlled, even applications.

Avoid oversaturating the leather. Apply additional light coats as needed to achieve the desired appearance.

Step 5 — Dry and Finish

Allow the material to dry completely according to the supplied instructions.

For suede and nubuck, gently restore the nap using an appropriate brush when the leather is fully dry.

Use the supplied conditioner only as directed for the leather type.

Can You Change the Color of Suede or Nubuck?

Yes. Leather Magic Aniline Leather Dye can be used to restore the original color or change compatible suede and nubuck leather to a new shade.

However, the original color will influence the final result.

Changing light-colored leather to a darker shade generally offers more predictable results than changing dark leather to a significantly lighter color.

Dramatic color changes may require additional dye and may not produce the exact appearance of a new material.

For the best results, contact Leather Magic before attempting a major color change.

Custom Leather Dye Color Matching

Leather Magic manufactures its own leather restoration products and offers professional custom color matching.

Choose a standard color from our leather color charts or send a representative sample of your original material.

For the most accurate match, we recommend providing a sample approximately 1 inch by 1 inch from a concealed area that retains the original color.

Photographs are less reliable because lighting, camera settings, and computer displays can change how colors appear.

Current color options:

  • Standard color from our charts — Included

  • Custom color matched from your sample — Additional $18.00

  • Custom two-tone color match — Additional $34.00

If you are sending a sample, complete the Color Swatch Inquiry Form and include the required order information.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. This kit uses an alcohol-based dye system formulated for suede, nubuck, and unfinished leather. Conventional Leather Magic Color Coats use a different technology intended for finished or protected leather.

Only when the leather has been correctly identified as a compatible unfinished type. Most automotive seats have protective finishes and require a different restoration product.

No. Leather Magic Aniline Leather Dye is formulated to provide permanent, long-lasting color. Once the dye has dried completely, it will not rub off or transfer onto clothing or other materials. Proper application and complete drying are essential to achieving these results.

Yes. We offer custom color matching using a physical sample of the leather.

Not as a general substitute for a semi-aniline restoration system. Semi-aniline leather typically has a protective surface finish and requires compatible refinishing products.

No. This is a color restoration kit, not a structural repair kit. Physical damage requires appropriate repair materials and techniques.
